What recommendations can anyone make on a decent quality set of "ears"? Went to the range with my son last night and thought I was protected until the young guy next to me started firing his rifle. Had no issues with other shooters but I swear it sounded like a howitzer. I don't know exactly what he was shooting other than it was LOUD. I have been experiencing hearing problems for a while now but after last night it's gotten worse. I was wearing foam earplugs as well as over the ear protection and it still hurt.

I use the Howard Leight Impact Sports. They work pretty well. I have had a couple instances in an indoor range though where they weren't as quiet as I'd like. Other than that, no issues.
I specifically try to avoid sitting next to somebody shooting a compensator. Even on an AR-15, they can get very annoying. Painful even.
Are you wearing electronic ear protection or just passive?
