I use a high quality 18650 battery as my power source, it’s small, portable, rechargeable and has just the right output at 30watts to do some really crisp clean etching. My etching kit fits in a wallet tin, solution pads and all.Learn, Innovate, Share!!!
That is some really good etching!! I didn't etch any on the build I'm working on now, but I have big plans on the next build.I got really lucky; I have an old battery charger that has three settings. 2amp,10amp, and 50amps. Doing some test stuff, I found that 2amps barely works, 10amps works best, and 50amps will etch to fast while washing out under stencils. 10amps at 15 minutes worked best.
My procedure for etching.1. Purchased stencils from. Dogfightink. He has a large selection of stencils.2. Cleaned part with parts cleaner and alcohol.3. Placed stencil on lower receiver. Removed top layer to reveal underlying stencil. Making certain to go slow and not remove and of the red stencil material4 this lower was anodized. Which must be removed prior to stencil. Get some yellow cap easy off oven cleaner. Spray a little on a q tip and rub on stencil. Make sure not to get it on other areas. Let the easy off sit for about 10 mins. You will see when the black comes off. Once off wipe the easy off away.5. I used a glue gun to make a dam around my stencil to hold the etching solution.6. Mix some white vinegar with salt. Was a guess on my part. 1/4 cup vinegar. 4 tablespoons salt. Mix well to dissolve salt.7. My power source was 2 9volt batteries connected to each other. Neg to positive. Hooked a wire with alligator clip from the positive side to the lower receiver.8. Alligator clip wire to neg side of battery.9 soak some q tips in the vinegar solution. Place a liberal amount in the dam you made. Just enough to cover the surface. Place the neg end of wire on end of soaked w tip and place inside dam. You should hear a hissing sound. Gently move the q tip around where you want stenciled. Replace q-tip when it turns black. For the stencil I did up top I rubbed it for 10 mins. You can check your work with exacto knife tip to make sure you’re getting a good etch.10. Remove stencil. You should have a nice etch.
I love electro etching very much, I have done some sort of etching with every build I’ve done. On the one I’m currently working on I’ve done some custom etching on the companion edc blade and the Ulticlip on the sheath. I’m not ready to reveal anything quite yet but stay tuned this thing is beautiful.
