I have an OT Defense 25w and a 30W from Harbor Freight. I seem to be struggling lately in getting a good burn on a PF940C job I have going with either wattage, especially on the tips that have finer details in them. What burner are you all using on the various P80 frames? My understanding is the SS has more glass content in the frame and is even harder to work with. I've done OK with each size of P80 frame, but I wonder if I've pushed my burners too hard and now they are under-performing.
Thats odd
I have stippled 9 p80s but only one Glock, I found the Glock harder to stipple but I had no problem keeping my iron hot. I have an OD Defense 30w iron. It does sound like you need a new iron if it is not staying hot.
Having a constant heat with your iron is key for a pattern to look the same.
I'm doing a Lone Wolf now; it seems like it has more fill in the plastic than a P80, but it is not a problem to stipple.

In case this helps others, I reached out to Micah at OT on this for his advice. He said the high glass content in P80s makes them more difficult to work with. Suggests more heat than not, taking more time, even letting the burner sit for10 minutes in between sessions and sticking with the small round to keep it from losing heat. Sounds like my fancier tips will be saved for glock frames or sig grips.
by JEFFRO » Thu Oct 20, 2022 1:46 pm Thanks. Micah @ OT said he recommends their 30W for the PF940C. He's also told me don't bother with the SS frame, though I've had OK luck on that frame with their small round tip. I've messaged Will as well and he's done a couple P80s for me. I know he's said some of his patterns won't register all their detail in the P80 frames. I feel like I've got my pressure down having successfully stippled somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 frames without this issue. Not sure exactly what's going on suddenly and if I should give the OT 30W a try. To clarify the issue, the first few presses burn well and throw off that polymer smoke, and then the tip seems to be progressively losing heat and no longer burns until I let it sit and heat back up.

When I first started stippling, I used irons with 25w up 60-80w. I found the hotter the iron the less control you have over your burn, and it was hard to repeat. I finally bought an OD Defense 30w with short arm (this really help me with control) This is all I use now. Stippling is about repeating the pressure used over and over. Once you get this down a 25-30w is all you need. I asked Will from ShowGun Customs what he used, and it was an OD Defense 25w iron.
