Have you ever seen the guy or girl that's labeled "lucky" because everything seems to go their way?  I'd be willing to bet that they’re the definition of a "Go-Getter". Today we're going to dive into a book that will help you gain the attitude and mindset to be the lucky Go-Getter that you desire to be.

Welcome to "Power Book Barista were we serve up overviews of fun, easy to read fictional "Power Books" designed to help you hack life challenges, obstacles and pitfalls. Oh and we'll also be enjoying select coffees from around the world along the way. If that's something that interests you, consider subscribing.

Today we're jumping into the world of "The Go-Getter: A Story That Tells You How To Be One" by Peter Bernard Kyne. Our story begins as Mr. Alden "Cappy" Ricks, Mr. Skinner, President and General Manager of the Ricks Logging & Lumbering Company and Captain Matt Peasley, President and Manager of the Blue Star Navigation Company and Cappy's son-in-law are having an intense conversation. Cappy, the founder of both companies who retired 10 years earlier, is displeased at how Mr. Skinner and his son-in-law have run the Shanghai office. He feels that they  Haven't paid enough attention when appointing the general manager there. In fact the last 3 people have gone, self destructed and even stolen money from the company.

Mr. Skinner and Matt don't feel that "Andrews", the most qualified candidate, has been tested or has enough experience to head up that office. Cappy decides to take it upon himself to create a sort of test Andrew's to prove he is or isn't qualified.

Enter William Peck, a serviceman who lost half his left arm and severely broke one of his legs in the Army. After being denied a job by Mr. Skinners and Captain Matt, he goes over their heads to request a job from Cappy Ricks. Cappy tells Skinner to give him Andrew's job but set the wage as he sees fit. To be fair but to also see what he's made of. To give him hard to sell product and see if he sells it. If so, then he gets Andrews' salary but if not then its "au revoir". Little did they know bill Peck was prepared.

Former Army Private Bill Peck had decided a week before ever seeking a job with Ricks Lumber that he would NOT be denied. He met and exceeded all expectations. He took every obstacle and turned it into an opportunity. He sold unsellable wood, created accounts where other reps had failed, he also exceeded the job that Andrews was doing before he went to the orient. In contrast, Andrew's was failing at his task at being the Shanghai general manager.

Cappy decides with Skinner that Bill Peck may be a better fit to lead the Shanghai office. But before doing so he decides that he must have him "deliver a blue vase". The "Degree of the Blue Vase" is the supreme test of a go-getter. This test is the definition of "challenges, obstacles and pitfalls".

“Chasing the Blue Vase” can be very elusive. Especially when the deck is stacked against you. Cappy and Skinner did all they could to get Mr. Peck to give up on his quest. They gave him an impossible timeframe, changed the location of the store and the name of the owner.

Peck's time in the military had taught him many go-getter qualities that I think we can all learn from this book. Qualities like, completing the task by ALL means necessary, loyalty, to follow and not question orders no matter how foolish (in most cases}, to do so on time and if that's not possible then do it anyway.

Peck goes through many trials and tribulations attempting to deliver the vase to Cappy Ricks. I will leave the rest of this story for you to discover. True "Go-Getters" or go-getters in training will not delay getting this book.

This book geared toward college students, Student athletes, executives of all ages but especially 20 somethings looking to climb the corporate ladder. You’ll definitely benefit from adding this book to your library and reading it over and over again.
