I was banking on MGB Forum's tool cribs to rent AR JiG & Router. That ship had sailed. Purchasing 5D tactical didn't make sense since PSA has blem lower are $50 shipped. Ordered blem PSA stripped lower and learning how to assemble. Most likely I will order pistol kit from PSA. Once I get my feet wet, I will buy custom parts to build for later build. So for AR newbie, what are some tips and tricks you recommend? Must have tools? Any MGB style vids instruction? Thanks in advance

Re: BCGs, bapegg recommended Toolcraft to on the MGB site so I have generally stuck with them. PSA usually has good prices on their blems. And I have been impressed with WC Armory from a pricing and service standpoint.

I have used a few mid level bcm and dainel defense and for just average shooting never noticed much difference tbh.. but both have extremely good reputations and ran good.. but then you have coatings on top of the manufacturer lol nickel boron is more expensive but is strong and slicker with less lubrication, phosphate is your more normal coating and is stronger the nickel boron but is thicker and wares out alot quicker especially if not kept lubed up generously, TiN coatings are basically nickel boron but with the gold look... there are other coating but I have not went too far down that rabbit hole... but definitely like my nickel boron coating bcgs better but a phosphate is perfectly fine for a average shooting gun... As for matching your upper with the bcg some like to do that but on the ar15 platform I'd not a must at all.. anything millspec is just that millspec and made to fit the millspec measurements. It's when you get into the ar10/dpms308 platform is where you need to watch different style uppers/bcg and your bcg/barrel because the platform don't have millspec measurements things can be different... Ar9,45,40 and 10mm pcc I have used angstadt arms for 2 ar45s and odinworks for 2 ar9s and both brands worked great with no issues... Thanks for the info! I have wondered about this for a while, all thou I have built AR-15s and AR-9s I never got into them as deep as I have in the P-80s. I bought a book and used PSA build kits, 5-D jig for building the lower.

I just got a stainless steel FailZero M16 / AR-15 EXO Coated Bolt Carrier Group ($99.99 on sale reg $169.99 haven't shot it yet) for my 5.56/.223 full build https://www.primaryarms.com/failzero-ex ... rier-group. Got a PSA complete .300 blackout Upper with mil spec Black Nitride BCG ($259.99) and a separate mil spec black nitride PSA bcg ($69.99) for my 2nd .300 blackout full build (unsure where I got the upper receiver https://palmettostatearmory.com/catalog ... 516446953/ . Damnit I thought I put it in the build list). No issues with either. Just FYI. Still need BCG's for the 2 AR9's and AR10.

by seniormoment » Fri Apr 22, 2022 9:30 am Someone else mentioned that they use the same brand bcg as their upper, makes sense I guess. The different coatings is another question.

That is a good question, I often wondered what the deference between BCG is? All mt ARs use the stock PSA that comes with their upper kits.
by RAMjetta » Thu Apr 21, 2022 7:17 am
Oof now that's a loaded question. Red19sti or maybe Jesse Yates and Oldtanker would probably be good candidates to answer this one. I don't think I have enough experience with different BCGs to give a great answer.

What would be the most reliable bcg for the money? Not looking to spend a fortune and I realize you get what you pay for.

by oldtanker » Mon Feb 28, 2022 7:51 am The Moduslus jig is almost identical to the 5D jig. Go with either one based on availability and you should be foog. Rick

Mooner, I am still relatively new to the platform myself but I found this video helpful: https://www.full30.com/v/thankful-cancel-OAs65 Definitely get a good armorers wrench. 5d jig is easy to use. If you are going to do a few it'd be worth it to own one.

The blog on 80-lower.com has several decent videos and write ups for finishing and assembly.
by oldtanker » Fri Feb 25, 2022 12:47 am Actually the stock trigger isn't bad if you polish the sear. Rick

Looking for a spring and detent that shot somewhere across the room is almost futile. If you have fumble fingers put the lower in a plastic or cardboard box to help keep the flying parts contained should you launch one. If your lower uses a roll pin for the bolt catch. Make sure you have the correct roll pin punch and put some masking tape on lower to keep from scratching the finish. Get rid of the mil-spec trigger! World of difference between a $100 trigger and the one that’s included in the LPK.

Youtube or other videos. You can find step by step instructions. Consider an OOPS kit too. Mostly has stuff that is easily lost. Tiny pins and springs that love to take flight. They generally run in the 10 to 20 dollar range. Rick
